Have you ever heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? I first heard this saying several years back, and found it to be catchy. It actually makes a lot of sense. Do you know where the quote came from? An alcoholics anonymous group in the early 80s. Now the quote really makes sense. We can’t free ourselves from addictions by doing things repeatedly that have never worked before.
But you know that’s not the real definition of insanity. It is a good symptom of it though. Dictionary.com defines insanity as a derangement of the mind; extreme foolishness. Now I’m no clinical psychologist, but when I look around the world today, we don’t seem to be short on derangement of the mind and extreme foolishness. You could charitably say that the world has collectively lost its mind. Are we all in agreement on this? Good. Didn’t think it would be a tough sell.
Here’s the hard part. How do we avoid getting swept away in all this foolishness? How would an insane person know they are insane? I’m not using this word in any clinical sense, and certainly don’t want to make light of the suffering of those that have medical diagnoses. Seriously though- how do we know when we are drifting out of sanity? Getting caught up in doing things that make no sense, that make no difference, and wasting these precious lives that God has granted us. We have to first acknowledge our capability of heading that direction, but we need some kind of test or wake up call to figure out where we land on the insanity spectrum.
We’ve got just the test this weekend. If you are brave enough, confident enough, or really just want to live a life that matters, let’s dial in together and explore one of the craziest chapters in all of scripture- Daniel chapter 4.
I invite you to join with us this weekend as we continue our series on the Book of Daniel. Our socially distanced service is Saturday afternoon at 3:30, and our Sunday morning service is at 10:15, where you can join us online if you can’t make it in person. We also have excellent Sunday School classes at 9 for all ages.
Have a great weekend and I look forward to pursuing Christ, Community, and the Great Commission Together with you soon!
