Judgement Day, Revelation 20:11-15

You might wonder how to handle the worst news imaginable. We’ve all been there—receiving or delivering news that shakes us to our core. Whether it’s a devastating diagnosis, a financial crisis, or the loss of a loved one, bad news is a part of life. But how do we respond to it? How do we find hope in the midst of despair? This is a question that resonates deeply with all of us, and it’s one that the Bible addresses with profound clarity.

In Revelation 20:11-15, we encounter the ultimate bad news: the reality of hell and eternal separation from God. It’s a sobering passage that reminds us of the gravity of our choices and the eternal consequences they carry. Yet, even in this dire warning, there is a glimmer of hope—a silver lining for those whose names are written in the Book of Life. This sermon explores how we can face the worst news with hope, grounded in the assurance of our salvation through Jesus Christ.

Understanding the Reality of Bad News

We all know the sinking feeling that comes with bad news. It’s a universal experience that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and helpless. But as Christians, we are called to respond differently. The Bible teaches us that while bad news is inevitable, it doesn’t have to define us. Instead, we can find strength and hope in the promises of God.
In Revelation 20, we see a vivid depiction of the Great White Throne Judgment. It’s a scene that underscores the seriousness of sin and the reality of eternal punishment for those who reject Christ. But it’s also a reminder of the hope we have in Jesus. For those who have placed their faith in Him, there is no condemnation. Our names are written in the Book of Life, and we are spared from the judgment that awaits those who do not know Him.

Responding to Bad News with Faith

So, how do we respond to bad news in light of this truth? First, we must acknowledge the reality of our situation. Denial and avoidance won’t change the facts. Instead, we need to face the truth head-on, trusting that God is with us in the midst of our trials.
Second, we must cling to the hope we have in Christ. The Bible assures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). This means that no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, we can rest in the knowledge that God is in control and that He has a plan for our lives.
Finally, we must share this hope with others. Just as we have received the good news of salvation, we are called to share it with those around us. This means being a source of encouragement and support for those who are struggling, and pointing them to the hope that is found in Jesus.

Taking the Next Step

The point is, Jesus wants your whole heart. What will you do this week to give it to Him? How can you share the hope you have with someone who is facing bad news? Remember, without taking this step, you might miss out on what Jesus wants for you. Be direct, be specific, and be intentional in your actions.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the hope we have in Jesus. Help us to face the bad news in our lives with faith and courage, knowing that You are with us every step of the way. Give us the strength to share this hope with others, and to be a light in the darkness. We trust in Your promises and look forward to the day when we will be with You forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessings,
